GOODBYE TO HIGH

‘Some things that used to come naturally for women, and were so easy, become completely impossible when you get old. I’m talking about wearing high heels.

When I was in my teens and 20s, I’d think nothing of spending the day in fourinch stilettos. Traipsing around shops and running for buses was totally normal then. Now, if I’m not getting in a taxi at my front door and being dropped off outside a restaurant or whatever, I can’t wear them. I even have to think about where the toilets might be in the restaurant. If they’re up or down a precarious set of stairs then it’s a no from me.

A friend of mine blames Covid-19 because she, like a lot of people, when they were locked in their homes didn’t get dressed for months on end. She was wearing them in the office for the first time since the madness and said she was walking around like a five-year-old in her mum’s shoes! There might be something in that – leg muscles, movement and posture all change when you wear heels and your body gets used to that, but she’s no Spring chicken so it’s more like she’s in denial that it’s probably her age.

I mourn my young feet because now they’re virtually not fit for purpose. It’s so annoying. All shoes, including most of my trainers, hurt! It hasn’t stopped me keeping quite a few pairs of beautiful but ridiculous heels though. I occasionally get them out of their boxes and walk around the bedroom in them. Mark quite likes it when I do that! But what’s really mad is, I’ve bought new ones, too.
