Should doorstep charity collections be banned?
We all like to do our bit and give what we can to charity – but should it be on our own terms? A fundraising watchdog said they were toughening up rules after an inquiry found ‘performancerelated pay models’ had resulted in an increase in ‘poor behaviour’. They added that agencies, who carry out fundraising on a charity’s behalf, must be monitored closely and receive the relevant training. It comes as an investigation by The Times revealed how fundraisers for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH Charity) were taught to use psychological motivators to anticipate any objection from the public. They found that the fundraisers, who earned commission rather than an hourly wage, were repeatedly placing ‘undue pressure’ on their customers, despite the watchdog warning against the practice.
Gerald Oppenheim, the chief executive of the Fundraising Regulator, told the outlet: ‘You have to know and understand who’s doing it for you, have they been properly briefed? There is enough evidence around, from the reporting that’s taken place, that things are not as good as they ought to be.’ Do you think doorstep charity collections should be banned? Let us know…
