The Amy Winehouse biopic BackTo Blackmakes for emotional viewing – especially for those who knew her.
The film charts the star’s tumultuous relationship with her ex-husband Blake – which led to her penning the much-acclaimed album of the same name – before she tragically died of alcohol poisoning in 2011, aged just 27.
And while some friends of the late icon have said it portrays Blake as a ‘Disney Prince’ and doesn’t accurately show the reality – that he introduced her to class A drugs – he’s now opened up about how he, too, felt watching their story.
‘I wasn’t just friends with Amy, we were married,’ Blake, now aged 42, explained in a recent interview. ‘We were together and deeply in love. Going from that to the addiction, there were some real difficult parts [of the film] to process, but the upside of that was that it was almost therapeutic.’
The story follows them from meeting in a pub in London’s Camden Town in 2005 to tying the knot in Florida in 2007 and, eventually, divorcing in 2009.
Blake – who met with the actor who plays him, Jack O’Connell – choked back tears as he admitted his wrongdoings, saying if he could bring her back he would. ‘Obviously it’s a horrible, terrible drug – I’ve been clean for years myself – but I was addicted... It’s not as black and white as that...
