In his new series, TV favourite Robson Green has left Grantchester behind to explore the Amazon

After decades entertaining audiences in hit dramas like Soldier, Soldier, Grafters and

Grantchester, Robson Green has cast his net wider, with shows embracing his passion for fishing, his beloved North East and travel further afield. His latest series sees the 59-year-old star take on an epic adventure, exploring the wonders of the Amazon Rainforest.

The trip saw Robson get up close with pink dolphins, sloths and piranhas, learn traditional dancing, visit a turtle sanctuary, go canoeing and of course squeeze in a spot of fishing.

It was a time he’ll always cherish – despite battling wasps in his pants! my plans were for Christmas. I was intending to go abroad as I always do, and then he told me I had been offered an adventure in the Amazon. I had to pinch myself! Of course I wanted to go to South America to see this extraordinary kaleidoscope of colour and wildlife. I’ve got a wonderful balance in my life that I don’t take for granted. I enjoy doing a lot of drama, but of course I will sign up to the adventure of a lifetime.

In many ways I felt very at home in the Amazon, but there are definitely scary and dangerous things there. I was stepping outside my comfort zone,

which is a good thing. There are animals that can eat you or really hurt you if you’re not careful, so there is that jeopardy throughout the series. And I did come a cropper with some of the smaller creatures. I stepped on a giant black wasp one day, and our guide, Saru, just said

That sounds pretty terrifying!

It was! But the most anxious I felt was climbing to the top of the tree canopy in Alter do Chao. The weather conditions were a real challenge. As I climbed the tree, the wind got up and this thing was rocking... Even though

‘Robson, run!’ All these black wasps were going inside my clothing, my pants and my hair, unleashing their venom because I’d stepped on their house. They were pretty upset and they got me back! There were also giant tarantulas, which just seemed to be everywhere at one point.

I was tethered, I really felt like I was living on the edge and the adrenaline kicked in.

What was it like having the opportunity to fish in the Amazon?
