WHAT’S THE IMPACT OF BEING DIAGNOSED SO LATE?

Iwas diagnosed with a gluten intolerance in my 70s, and I’m just wondering what the impact of being diagnosed so late may have had on my body? Clearly, the intolerance has built up over time – but it must have done some damage?

Gluten intolerance occurs when your body reacts badly to gluten which is a protein found in foods containing wheat barley and rye. It is also known as non-coeliac gluten sensitivity with symptoms similar to those of irritable bowel syndrome and coeliac disease. The symptoms can include tummy pain, bloating, constipation, or diarrhoea. Symptoms unrelated to the gut might include headaches, tiredness, brain fog, muscle pain and even skin rashes. The good news is that unlike coeliac disease, where your immune system attacks your body when you eat gluten and damages the lining of the gut affecting food absorption, there is no lasting damage in people with gluten intolerance. Symptoms clear up when gluten is avoided and luckily there are many food products available which are gluten-free.
