JUNE

AVON

CLEVEDON-WESTON-SUPER-MARE: Two Sandwich Terns were at Uphill (21st). Clevedon-Yeo had a Marsh Harrier twice, and a few late Whimbrels.

SEVERNSIDE: Severn Beach had a dark-bellied Brent Goose (12th), two Common Scoters (25th), a Greenshank (15th) and eight Kittiwakes (9th). Migrating Nightjars were at four coastal locations. Avocets and Little Ringed Plovers bred at Pilning Wetland, with two Spoonbills (11th) and the first returning Wheatear and Redstart also there. Three Mediterranean Gulls were noted.

THE RESERVOIRS: Chew held a Garganey, Goldeneye, Wood Sandpipers (18th and 22nd), a Spotted Redshank (from 9th), two Black Terns (1st), a few Common Terns, a Little Tern (25th), two Cattle Egrets, a Marsh Harrier and a few Hobbies. A few Great White Egrets were noted.

OTHER SITES: Quails arrived (from 8th), with birds at Marshfield and Hinton Charterhouse. A Fieldfare flew over a Bristol garden mid-month. Pied Flycatchers bred in private woodlands in North Somerset. Tree Pipits and Siskins may have bred on the Mendips. Corn Buntings and Yellowhammers saw multiple reports away from their traditional Marshfield area. Jane Cumming

DEVON

HIGHLIGHTS: Three Spoonbills were at Starcross (2nd), with up to four at Bowling Green Marsh (6th-25th), one on the Otter Estuary (15th), and two at Exminster Marshes (16th). Dawlish Warren had a Little Stint (2nd-4th), Pomarine Skua (4th), dark-bellied Brent Goose (9th), Great Northern Diver (10th) and four Balearic Shearwaters (17th). A Savi’s Warbler sang at Budleigh Salterton (1st-3rd). Curlew Sandpipers were at Wembury (8th) and Crownhill Down (14th). A Black-crowned Night Heron was at Bampton (13th). A White-winged Black Tern was at South Milton Ley (15th). Ospreys flew over Musbury (17th) and Colyton (19th). A Black Guillemot was at Drake’s Island, Plymouth (17th).

ISLES OF SCILLY

HIGHLIGHTS: A few Red Kites remained from last month’s huge influx, with less than six around the islands until mid-month when the last birds left the islands. A Buzzard was seen occasionally over St Mary’s. A Nightjar, Cuckoo and Balearic Shearwater were at St Agnes (1st), with a Rose-coloured Starling there (1st-2nd). Two Rooks were at Helvear, St Mary’s (2nd-3rd). Golden Orioles were seen occasionally until mid-month, mostly on the north and eastern parts of St Mary’s. Three were present (4th).
