AVON

CLEVEDON-WESTON-SUPER-MARE: Sand Point had 1,000 Manx Shearwaters (3rd). Anchor Head had a Fulmar (31st).

SEVERNSIDE: Severn Beach had a Common Scoter (to 8th) and a Scaup (22nd). Northwick Warth had an Avocet (11th). Little Ringed Plovers probably bred at Pilning Wetland. Other waders along Severnside included Whimbrels, Bar-tailed Godwits, two Sanderling and two Wood Sandpipers. Three Mediterranean Gulls and several Sandwich Terns were seen along the upper coast. Gales brought in a Black Tern, Arctic Skua, a few Storm Petrels, a Cory’s Shearwater, 1,000 Manx Shearwaters, and the area’s first ‘Blue’ Fulmar. Coastal sites also produced a few Yellow Wagtails and a Tree Pipit.

THE RESERVOIRS: Chew had two Garganeys, Little Ringed Plovers, 34 Black-tailed Godwits, a Ruff, the summering Spotted Redshank, three Greenshanks, two Yellow-legged Gulls and a couple of Common and Arctic Terns.

All three egret species were seen in small numbers, along with Marsh Harriers and Hobbies, most of the latter being at Blagdon.

OTHER SITES: Quail were around Marshfield (to 8th). There was a Firecrest in Bristol (2nd). The first returning Redstarts and Whinchats moved through, particularly at Chipping Sodbury Common.

CORNWAL

L NORTH CORNWALL: A Red-backed Shrike was at Tintagel (3rd). A Curlew Sandpiper was on the Camel Estuary (8th). An Egyptian Goose was at Crowdy Reservoir (9th). A Great White Egret was at Bude (15th).

SE CORNWALL: Cory’s Shearwaters were off the Rame Peninsula (3rd). Forty Swifts were at Torpoint (6th), with 42 Mediterranean Gulls there (11th). Bodmin Moor had a Cuckoo (5th) and 12 Crossbills (18th).

WEST CORNWALL: Porthgwarra logged a remarkable 4,000 Cory’s Shearwaters (30th), Scopoli’s, Barolo and Little Shearwaters mid-month, a possible Short-tailed Shearwater (23rd) and a Great

Shearwater (11th). Wilson’s Petrels were off Pendeen and Pendennis Point. Twenty Storm Petrels were off Falmouth Bay (27th). Bee-eaters were at Mousehole (7th), Lands End (17th) and Polgigga (20th). A Black Guillemot was at Swanpool (2nd-4th).
