The region’s rarer birds included a Barred Warbler in Shropshire, Glossy Ibis at Barton-in-Fabis, Notts, a showy juvenile Purple Heron at Whelford and Frampton-on-Severn (both Gloucs), and a juvenile Ring-necked Duck at Titchmarsh NR, Northants.

DERBYSHIRE

HIGHLIGHTS: At Brassington, a juvenile Gannet was picked up exhausted and taken to a rescue centre to be released the following day on the east coast (23rd). A Red-throated Diver was at Butterley Reservoir (23rd-25th). Carr Vale had a Rock Pipit and two Grey Plovers (5th). Carsington Water had four Red-crested Pochards all month, two Rock Pipits and a brief Shag (30th). Foremark Reservoir had four juvenile Shags from 29th. Great Hucklow had a Black Redstart (1st). Cattle Egret roosted at Willington GP all month and numbers grew to 11 on 17th, with Great White Egret also breaking the county record (12 on 21st). Ogston Reservoir had Rock Pipit (4th & 25th) and Garganey (9th). Pleasley Colliery had two Red-crested Pochards (17th).

Willington GP also had Garganey (2nd) and Woodhead Reservoir had Rock Pipit (9th & 17th). Wyver Lane had a Spotted Redshank (17th). Darley Dale had the unusual record of a female Common Scoter on floodwater (21st).

ASTON ON TRENT GP: Highlight was a Yellow-legged Gull (3rd).

BARROW GP: Two Pintail (28th), Common Sandpiper (18th), Yellow-legged Gull (5th).

BREASTON NR: Hobby (6th), 37 Golden Plover (1st), six Swallows (1st), two House Martins (5th), and two Bramblings (22nd).

CARR VALE: Four Whooper Swan (16th), Pink-footed Goose (max 1,950 on 25th), Bittern, five Red Kite (18th), Merlin (17th), Golden Plover, Dunlin, Jack Snipe (9th), Yellow-legged Gull (24th), Reed Warbler, Brambling, Lesser Redpoll (max 130 on 1st).

CARSINGTON WATER: Whooper Swan, Pink-footed Goose (max 325, 25th), Pintail, two Common Scoters (21st), Red Kite, Merlin (22nd), Ringed Plover, three Sanderling (15th), Dunlin, Redshank (29th), Common Sandpiper, Yellow-legged and Caspian Gull, Woodpigeon (max 3,500 on 16th), House Martins (8th), six Stonechats (12th), Crossbill, two Hawfinches (10th).

DRAKELOW NR: There were three Whooper Swans and Willow Warbler (14th).

EREWASH MEADOWS: 150 Teal (23rd), Pintail, Marsh Harrier (16th), three Swallows (2nd), Lesser Whitethroat (2nd), two Blackcaps (1st-12th) and Willow Warbler (1st).

FOREMARK RES: Highlights were 25 Little Egrets (24th) and Green Sandpiper (29th).

HIGH BRIDGE GP: 100 Cormorant (7th), Redshank, Green Sandpiper, 17 Swallows, six Chiffchaffs (1st).

OGSTON RESERVOIR: Whooper Swan, Pink-footed Goose (max 1,555 on 25th), 51 Gadwall, Pintail, Common Scoter, Red Kite, Merlin (1st), Ringed Plover (6th-7th), Dunlin (1st-2nd), Common Sandpiper (9th), Yellow-legged and Caspian Gull (1st), two Arctic Tern (21st), Woodpigeon (max 4,580 on 25th), three Tree Sparrows (8th), 111
