WILD SHETLAND

BY BRYDON THOMASON SHETL AND TIMES LTD, HB, £36.99

As a local living as a crofter and a bird tour guide, Brydon came to photography quite late in life, but boy, has he excelled at it?! This book looks at all of Shetland, not just Fetlar, his home island, and it’s a book covering the changing seasons. If you have not been to the UK’s most northerly set of islands, this book will take you there. Brydon has already done a book on Otters and although they’re in here, it is the birds, landscape and the quality of Brydon’s work that really stands out. This could be the one book that makes you book your ticket to this magical place.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

NORTH EAST ENGLAND WILD GUIDES, SB, £18.99

If you want to see what an area has to offer, then these full colour guides are great value for money. This one covers Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham, North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire, with sub-sections on subjects such as Hadrian’s Wall . Each location has a picture, some large, others small (but none with rain!), with vital information on the site, including how to get there. Each section also has a map and details on local pubs and accommodation. It is not themed purely on wildlife, but for example, the Wildlife Wonders section shows the Farne Islands nature reserve. A handy book to have in the car if you’re heading up the A1.
