Fields have evolved over thousands of years across the country, but saying when changes happened has proved difficult: our cover story explains how a new scientific dating process could transform landscape history. Another new technique could revolutionise the dating of wooden structures and artefacts. It is seen in action in the Palace of Westminster, revealing the story of a lost historic passageway. Butser Ancient Farm has a pioneering project to create a Neolithic house: the excavators of the original house and experimental archaeologists describe the thinking behind their striking thatched building. And from Yorkshire the lead excavator writes about two Iron Age cemeteries and the remains of 87 burial mounds, where a variety of graves include two with ponies and a chariot.
