Why plant trees? The government says that doing so will help tackle climate change and biodiversity loss, but the deep history of British woodlands suggests another way. We feature new ancient DNA research in two major stories, one looking at a single family in the Neolithic, the other at the broad sweep of Bronze Age migrations. Our “big dig” is in Herefordshire, where excavations have revealed a monumental complex with deep European roots dating from the time of Britain’s earliest farmers.
