Coo, look at our cover bird: a dove, but which dove? In fact it’s the Barbary, a domestically created “species” like the Bengalese finch. Though it has a rich history in aviculture, Barbary fan Hein van Grouw maintains in his in-depth article that it has largely vanished from the UK – and this at a time when all manner of interesting colour mutations have emerged elsewhere. Thoroughly deserving of more attention, is Hein’s message. The Pyrrhura conures, meanwhile, are growing in popularity and we explain why. “Quiet calls” is one key phrase here.
