Life beyond bricks

Exploring Europe in your campervan is all very well, but don’t forget what we’ve got on our doorstep. Tash flies the flag for the UK

HI

Springtime has a few milestones for me this year. It’s been five years since we sold our house to live and travel in a ’van with our three cats. It’s been two years since I started my remote business. It’s been over a year since I’ve been writing this column (which has been a dream!) and it’s already been a year since I swapped my Volkswagen Transporter for Fabio, my little microcamper.

This got me reflecting and reminiscing, especially about all of the awesome places I’ve visited on my travels. Yes, I’ve been to incredible destinations in Europe and beyond (can you believe the Bailey Sahara Challenge was a year ago already?), but did you know I spent 12 months touring the UK in my first year of full-timing? (That was the gap year that turned into a lifestyle.)

Many people asked, “Are you not going to Europe?” and my husband, Jon, and I unanimously agreed, “No!”. We wanted to explore what was on our doorstep and see what the UK has to offer. Hailing from Hampshire, we had never properly explored further up the country. Well, it didn’t disappoint, especially for a couple of history-loving, outdoorsy, foodies like us.

With that in mind, I thought it would be great to share some of my highlights for a little UK travel inspiration, especially now that the days are longer and the weather is perking up. I say highlights because I can’t pick my favourites, that really would be impossible!

The first place that springs to mind is west Wales, specifically Pembrokeshire. I absolutely fell in love with the rugged coastline; the Blue Lagoon in Abereiddy was surreal! St Davids (the UK’s smallest city) also made a big impression, especially the stunning cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace.

Another area that holds a special place in my UK travel memories is the Lake District. Admittedly, I had never been before as it was always quicker to fly away on my holidays than drive there but it definitely lived up to the hype. I couldn’t get over how stunning the area is.
