2013 JAGUAR XF 2.2 DIESEL

Rob Hawkins visits Nene Jag Specialists to follow them replacing the timing belt, tensioner, idler and water pump on a Jaguar XF 2.2D.

The timing belt assembly on the 2.2-litre diesel engine that powers many a Jaguar XF, and which is also used on a number of Fords, Volvos and Land Rovers, is quite a simple design. Despite there being a twin-cam cylinder-head, only the exhaust camshaft is driven by the timing belt, whereas the inlet cam is driven by a chain off the back of the exhaust cam. So, replacing the timing belt seems like you are working on a SOHC engine. Plus, there’s only a tensioner and idler pulley to replace, although the belt does drive the water pump, so that’s worth renewing – it’s only secured with seven bolts.

What isn’t so simple is the fitting of the timing tools, although they’re not difficult, just awkward, especially the two for the flywheel to lock the bottom end of the engine. The starter motor needs to be removed to access the flywheel and lock it, which is hidden away inside the engine bay. Ideally, a ramp or inspection pit is useful to be able to access the underside of the engine.

The essential timing tools are available from stockists including Sealey (part number VSE6126) for around £50. Whilst it may be feasible to use a suitable screwdriver or Allen key to lock the exhaust camshaft pulley and flywheel, a more secure means of holding the flywheel is required to be able to undo the front crankshaft pulley bolt that’s tightened to 70Nm +82°. Consequently, a triangularshaped tool (part of the timing toolkit) that’s secured to the starter motor’s three mounting holes is much more substantial and well worth the money.

To find out how the professionals replace the timing belt on the XF 2.2D, we followed Nene Jag Specialists of Peterborough complete the job. They usually allocate three and a half hours from start to finish.
