Giving my pooch one final groom, I swept the brush along his back and looked him up and down.

‘You’re show ready,’ I smiled at my American Bulldog Hustler as he wagged his tail.

I loved the dog show scene – it was a lovely atmosphere, full of like-minded people who were obsessed with woofers!

‘Hey, Anna,’ a voice said, and I spun around.

Jason was charming and dog-mad

‘Hi Jason,’ I smiled back. Jason and I met back in 2017 through mutual friends.

He ran a breeding kennels and was also an apprentice judge, so we often bumped into each other at shows.

He was always very friendly and knowledgeable about dogs, so I picked his brains for advice – Iadmired him.

‘Surprise!’ Jason said.

‘Hi, babe,’ I said, giving him a kiss. ‘We didn’t have plans together, did we?’

‘No, but I was in the area, so thought I’d see if you were free,’ he smiled at me.

‘I’m actually busy...’ I said, gesturing to the curlers in my hair. ‘I’m meeting my friend at the pub for dinner.’

‘No worries,’ he smiled. ‘I’ll give you a lift.’

‘Thanks babe,’ I grinned, putting on a final slick of lip gloss.

Pulling up outside the pub a few minutes later, I leant over and gave

Jason a kiss. ‘See you later,’ I smiled. Heading inside to meet my friend, I didn’t give it much more thought at all.

It was a nice evening, so af
