Q There are loads of junk food wrappers in the bin recently, and I think either my husband or son is to blame. Should I be worried about an eating disorder?

A It sounds like you’re worried that either your son or husband may be experiencing something like Binge Eating Disorder. If someone in the house is living with an eating disorder or you feel that something isn’t right, then seek advice from your GP or an eating disorder charity like Beat. Remember there are many reasons why junk food wrappers may appear – someone could have just been emptying out their bag, and the wrappers have gathered over a number of weeks. To alleviate your worry, speak to your husband and your son to understand what the reason could be.

How do I talk to her?

Q I’ve started finding clumps of hair down the side of my 13-year-old’s bed and I’m worried she is pulling her hair out. I’m not sure how to help or approach the subject…

A It is understandable to worry if you’ve seen hair down the side of her bed, and I’m sure you’re wondering what the reasons are for this.

You mention that you are worried she’s pulling her hair out, which can also be known as ‘trichotillomania’.

I’d suggest finding a time when both of you aren’t feeling rushed to gently ask her about this. Approach it in a way that feels warm and welcoming.

Perhaps phrase the question as: ‘I was sorting out your bed the other day and noticed that…’. Open the invitation for her to talk to you by saying something like: ‘If there is anything on your mind, I’m here for yo
