Q Recently, I’ve been having trouble sleeping. I don’t want to take tablets – what are natural ways to improve sleep quality? Kelly, York
A Having a regular sleep routine, both during the week and on weekends, is essential to good health. Calming practices, such as deep breathing or 10 minutes of meditation before bedtime, can work wonders.
Optimise your sleep environment – think quiet, dark rooms without electronics – and avoid caffeine after midday and heavy meals late in the evening.
Late-night exposure to blue light from our devices can disrupt our circadian rhythm – the body clock that regulates our sleep/ wake cycle – but morning sunlight can help reset it. Still not sleeping? Speak to your GP to check if any underlying issues could be the cause.
Why does my head hurt?
Q I’ve been suffering from persistent headaches lately. I’ve never had this problem before, but I’ve been playing a lot more video games than usual – should I be worried?
A Headaches can have various causes, from stress to underlying medical conditions. To find out what’s causing yours, start a headache diary and write down the frequency, intensity and any other symptoms you might have. Take note of any triggering factors, like diet or stress, too.
Assess your video game station – is your screen too bright? Is your chair the right height? Are you taking regular screen breaks? Avoid triggers picked up in the diary and make sure you’re sleeping enough, eating regular meals, staying hydrated and keeping up to date with eye tests.
If you feel a headache starting, take over-the-counter painkillers immediately so they’re most effective. If headaches disrupt daily life or are accompanied by vision changes, nausea or weakness, seek medical attention promptly.
