As the youngest car in our set and arguably the least classic-looking, we’d understand if you questioned the Smart’s inclusion. But if you like your frugal motoring to be delivered with a sense of humour and more than just a dash of cachet, look no further.

Yes, the ‘smart roadster-coupé BRABUS Xclusive’, to give this example its full name in corporate speak, is something of a Marmite car, but given that apparently it was inspired by the likes of the MG Midget, it’s worth giving it a chance. Especially because owners report them returning mpg in the mid-40s even when thrashed, 50-plus driven sensibly. And this is a clever, charming, characterful car not short on charisma, with quirky looks, plastic panels and an enthusiastic community of owners.

Smart’s origins lie with Mercedes-Benz parent firm Daimler, which gives it a little prestige by association, and Brabus is a Mercedes tuner, making this the go-faster version. Memories of driving one when they were new recall a raw, go-kart feel, which soon come flooding back upon reacquaintance. It’s not the last word in driving dynamics – the ride is hard and that gearbox, which you can use as an auto or a clutchless manual via paddles or the gearlever, could never be called slick – but it is entertaining.

It’s not quick, either, but you’re so low – 15mm lower than standard in a Brabus – that it doesn’t fail to feel fast, which in many ways is all that matters. And it sounds good under load, too, the whistle of the turbo occasionally adding to the soundscape. On the track it proves a neat-handling car, with plenty of grip and strong brakes – and this is a 129,000-mile example.
