Lee Atkins’ winning TVR Grantura chases down Tom Smith’s Jaguar E-type in Ecurie Classic Racing

After a dreadful deluge in 2021, the weather gods smiled on this yearʼs earlier-than-usual Autumn Classic at Castle Combe, Wiltshire, on 24 September.

There was a win each for Tim and Oliver Llewellyn aboard the family Allard J2 in the Historic Sports Car Clubʼs Griffiths Haig Trophy races, results that never seemed in doubt, even with it being only Timʼs second time out at this circuit. Championship leader and polesitter Alex Wilson was similarly dominant aboard his Cooper Mk10 in the 500 Ownersʼ Associationʼs contest for 500cc Formula Three cars, reaching the chequer first by 15.4 secs after 10 laps.

Tom Smith started on Ecurie Classic Racing pole in his Jaguar E-type and seemed to have it under control out in front. After the pitstops, the TVR Grantura driven by Lee Atkins was closing in on Smith, with Grant Williams (Jaguar Mk2) and Tom Barclay (Jaguar Mk1) dicing for third. Then, in the dying minutes, the E-typeʼs front-hinged bonnet came open, easing Atkinsʼ route to a last-gasp victory, with Smith holding on for second.

Polesitter and early leader Richard Wilsonʼs Maserati 250S sadly didnʼt go the distance in the FISCAR race, but 2019 victor Jonathan Abecassis (Austin-Healey 100) came through from fourth on the grid to take the spoils for a second time.
