One of only six Schuppan 962CRs ever built took Best in Show honours at the London Concours, making it by far the youngest winner the event has seen in its six years.

More than 100 beautiful, rare and at times slightly weird cars descended upon the Honourable Artillery Companyʼs lawns in central London from 6-8 June. The nine concours classes included traditional themes such as Golden Age Coupés and 60 years of Lamborghini, as well as the more esoteric Bespoke Automotive class and the colour-based Make Green Great Again category.

The growing acceptance of modern classics within the concours world was clear to see throughout the event, with a Renault Clio (albeit a rare V6) featuring in the Grand Tourisme class, and the 1991 Schuppan 962CR P1 winning Best in Show – the first time that a post-1980 model has taken the top prize. Built in Britain by Australian racing driver Vern Schuppan, the 962CR rebodied the drivetrain and much of the chassis of a Porsche 962 racer into a road-legal supercar. The 962CR P1 at the event was the projectʼs development car, built up from a 962 that had raced at Le Mans. Priced at more than $1.5m when new, only five more examples were produced up to 1994.

There was still plenty of more conventional concours fare on show, too. The Golden Age Coupés class was won by a 1966 Jensen C-V8 recently restored by JB Classic Cars (see The Specialist, p176), which overcame a Mercedes-Benz 300SL, Ferrari 250GT SWB, Aston Martin DB5 and other exotica. Lamborghini was the featured marque as the event celebrated the SantʼAgata outfitʼs 60th year
