Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce reports a huge, tenfold increase in demand for ATA Carnets

Since Brexit, transporting cars or motorbikes to the European Union could leave you facing fines of thousands of pounds if you donʼt have the correct documentation. Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce has become an expert in navigating these new custom laws, and has seen demand for ATA Carnets rise from 40 to 400 a month since the UK left the EU.

A car thatʼs unregistered and is being transported on a trailer, or is otherwise going abroad for a professional purpose (including motorsport), may need a Carnet. The GBCC advises that itʼs best to check if you have any uncertainty, and offers a free consultation service to figure out just that.

Located in the UKʼs traditional epicentre of motoring, the West Midlands, Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce has been dealing with automotive export documentation for more than 50 years, and now works with companies across the UK.

“For those of you attending events or race days in the EU this year and taking your car racing, or classic cars that will subsequently be returning to the UK, you need to be aware that some sort of customs formality will apply,” says David Harris, who heads up the documentation team after 25 years at the Chambers. “Since Brexit, we have had grown adults in tears on the phone, saying that they are with French or Spanish customs officers threatening to seize their precious vehicles. We have helped all sorts of people, from classic car enthusiasts to lawnmower racers, and right up to Formula One teams.”

The ATA Carnet simplifies the whole customs process into one single document, allowing cars to pass into and out of the EU – and other countries – without running the risk of being impounded, incurring fines, or being subject to large deposits. With an online application and special or courier delivery options, Carnets can be delivered at short notice, with collection from the Chambersʼ Birmingham office also possible.
