Atalanta prepares for action

Typical: you wait ages for one Atalanta, then three come along at once. In addition to the coupé and drophead featured this month (see p104), the Ward family of marque saviours had also rescued an Atalanta Special, which was acquired earlier this year by enthusiast Saul Stevens.

“My car was the third in the Ward family stable,” says Saul. “It is chassis number four, dating from 1937, and has been in bits for as long as anyone can remember, tucked away in storage gathering dust. I was lucky enough to be able to buy the rolling chassis in June and the car is now undergoing a full restoration.”

Saul plans to fit a V12 Lincoln-Zephyr engine, an original factory option, and will retain its two-seater body. “The aim is to use it for competition,” he continues. “The weight of the engine and the unusual independent suspension should make for an interesting ride. The Special has been accepted provisionally by the Vintage Sports-Car Club as a PVT (post-vintage thoroughbred), and I hope to be competing in 2025.”
