Nine-event series for 2024 aims to recreate the giddy days of 1980s streetbike drag racing

ULTIMATE STREET BIKE, the drag race series for road-legal bikes that ran from 1983 until the early 1990s, returns for 2024. Back in the day, these events could attract hundreds of riders and lots of spectators too. The organisers hope that, as well as seasoned drag riders, Classic Bike readers will come and have a go. If you have a pre-1990 bike in road-going trim to pitch against the 1/8 mile at Melbourne (seven rounds) or the quarter at Santa Pod (two rounds), why not? Enter the whole series, or simply do a round or two to test your mettle and your metal. It’s simple to enter and it won’t break the bank.

USB will run alongside the nine rounds of the Straightliners drag race series and offers three classes: Stock Street (wheelbase up to 64in); Modified Street (wheelbase up to 68in); and Two-strokes. Any bike manufactured up to and including 1990 is eligible to race.

The way it was in the ’80s. Now, with the return of the series, you can join the queue...

Appearance should be approximately stock. Bikes must be self-starting (electric or kick), and street tyres and lights must be fitted. Modern wheels and suspension are allowed. There are no capacity limits. Bikes using nitrous or a turbo run in the Modified class, unless they were OEM fitment. So-called ‘butchered’ classics such as Suzuki Bandit engines in older chassis and specials go in the Modified class.
