Daimler’s V8 250 is stepping out of the shadow of its Jaguar cousins

Market experts have noted the increasing appeal and value of the Daimler V8, while those of its Jaguar sibling appear to have dropped off.

The Jaguar Mk2 has been a market mainstay since the mid- to late-1970s.

Its following has ebbed and flowed, with the late-’80s boom seeing Mk2s achieving ridiculous sums by today’s standards but could it be slowing down again? And is the long over-shadowed Daimler V8 250 finally gaining ground?

‘Jag Mk2 prices were fun to watch last year and my opinion is that the appetite for the £25,000-50,000 “excellent to concours” examples has dropped off,’ says Southern

Cars’ Sam Bailey-Grange. ‘My money would be with the solid, half-decent £10kish-ers – the use/enjoy/tinker/fettle type of car that you can run about in and take to shows without being too precious over, which is where the market seems to be enjoying a bit of stability.

‘I like the Daimler V8s – they’re a bit different and very useful. They represent pretty good value for money – I’d be buying any low-mileage solid cars I come across.’

Manor Park Classics’ sales director, James Gregory, says: ‘Today, the Daimler is perceived to be the more respectable choice for buyers – the kind of car that would have been bought by a bank manager or solicitor. They’re starting to make some headway in the market even though prices in general are significantly lower than those of the Mk2.
