Advertising British Cars 1963-1966 £5.99

Book 12 of this 16-volume set collecting some of the best (and best-loved) car adverts of the 20th century covers 1963 to 1966, when the UK vehicle industry was at its zenith. And the optimism just radiates from the pages through the use of vibrant colours, creative imagery and dynamic, imaginative words.

The ads span market segments from the Mini and Hillman Imp through to Aston Martin and Rolls-Royce although it’s the ones for the more mass-market machines that are invariably the cleverest.

If you thought that only the ‘Minis have feelings too’ campaign of the Eighties projected Britain’s favourite small car as more of a family member or pet then check out the 1964 anthropomorphic effort here, where it’s presented as a baby, complete with a teddy bear in its nursery-decorated garage. A lovely and lively compendium.

Caravanning in the 1970s £15.99

While the title might conjure up images of Windsor Davies and Jack Douglas heading off for bawdy adventures with their Austin Maxi in Carry On Behind, the ‘70s was arguably the golden decade of British caravanning. For many families, tugging a small box on wheels behind them was a budget way of seeing the country before jetting to foreign climes became the norm.

The book is more than just a look at the many caravan makes and models of the era; it also examines how the craze took off, the social background that helped to perpetuate their popularity and the cars that were ideal towing machines. Some of the more eclectic accessories discussed are an absolute joy, too. The narrative is informative but also has sense of fun.
