WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

It drives perfectly. Kim Cairns carried out extensive recommissioning work – all documented – in 2020 including new brakes and tyres and a complete engine and gearbox re-build. It comes as no surprise, then, that the engine fires instantly and quietly. Once warmed up, water temperature, ammeter and oil pressure gauge needles remain steadfastly in the middle of their dials. Progress is swift, gear changes are seamless and there are no clonks or wandering from the steering or suspension. The brakes are powerful and draw the car up straight and true.

BODYWORK CHECK

A Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club report that comes with the car believes it to be original and unrestored and it shows in the car’s condition. There are some touched-in stone chips at the front, cracked paint around the nearside sidelight and some rust spots above the passenger-side rear door and the paint has been polished thin around the window pillars all round. But it’s generally in keeping with a car that has received regular cleaning and maintenance.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

The seats are lightly patinated with one glue repair to the dash-top wood and the rear driver’s-side seat back ashtray needs re-fitting properly, but otherwise it’s pretty much perfect. There’s a full and unused-looking jack and toolkit – of the sort that people pay a fortune for at autojumbles – in the spotless boot.
