Plethora of projects boosts sale rate at museum auction

AUCTION REVIEW CHARTERHOUSE, HAYNES INTERNATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM. 9 MARCH

Charterhouse’s auction of 9 March wasn’t the biggest on numbers but in terms of offering a broad take on the classic market it more than succeeded. From the barn-stored Lotus Esprit to a quartet of large pre-war American saloons all classic life was here, duly aided by some interesting projects and cars needing some re-commissioning.

The Esprit sold for £19,040 and an Austin Mini Clubman 1275GT whose shell was long past redemption, £4256. The 1920s American quartet all sold, showing the market can see beyond Fords in Model T and Model A guise.

Those seeking out some proper Brit classics had no grounds for complaint. A 1954 Ford Zephyr was bought for £8624 against a £10,000-12,000 estimate, and a 1960 Jaguar Mk2 in 3.8 manual/ overdrive form made £16,800. A 1970 MGB GT went beyond its £4500-5500 estimate to make £6496, a 1972 Midget £5376 against a £5000-6000 estimate.

With 80 per cent sold, Charterhouse’s efforts were well rewarded. Its next sale is on Thursday 8 June.
