AUCTION REVIEW

HAMPSON AUCTIONS, MAVERICKS, FLINTSHIRE. 11 MARCH

Estimate-busting Herald and early Fiesta go down well in North Wales

There was much to like at Hampson’s sale, which didn’t clash with other sales and so had the day very much to itself.

While it wasn’t the dearest car of the sale, the 1967 Triumph herald 12/50 that had seen more than £60,000-worth of expenditure was the best buy of the day at £16,031, some way behind the top price of the day – £90,000 – that bought a UK-market 1956 Jaguar XK140SE Roadster that had been with one family for 33 years. Staying with Jaguars, a lovely 1937 SS 1 ½-litre saloon, restored over almost a quarter of a century, was a fine buy at 20,250.

All four Morris Minors sold, the dearest (£15,750) a 1954 concours-restored Tourer while an original-order 1960 two-door was wisely snapped up at £2926.

A restored 1972 MG Midget made £8325 while a 1973 example (seven owners, 63,000 miles) was easier on the wallet at £4838. A 1973 Rover P6 2000SC showing a ‘credible’ 21,000 miles was bought for £6188 and an estate sale 2200SC for £2025.

A 1984 Ford Sierra XR4i running a 24-valve Cosworth V6 offered great tail-out potential for £7312, a 1983 Escort RS1600i made £21,375 and a 2001 Subaru Impreza WRX in fine original order was a good buy at £7312.

Offerings in the modern department delivered some of the best value sells with a trio of no-reserve Mercs including a 1992 190D (£1575), a 1993 E200 Elegance (£1462) and a 1997 C180 Elegance (£950).

Hampson’s next sale is on 13 May.

1979 FORD FIESTA 1.1L

A market obsession with fast Fords means that the ‘family’ models remain strangely overlooked. But some punters are keen to strike when the right model comes along and this two-owner not-quite entry-level ‘L’, had undoubted appeal. It was dry-stored for six years and its paperwork included old test certificates, tax discs and the original bill of sale. With tidy bodywork and paint and a super-smart interior it was a little gem.

1974 AUSTIN MINI CLUBMAN 1275GT

SOLD £8212

The Clubman 1275GT offers better value than a BMC/BL Mini Cooper, even though many say that the former lacks the latter’s rawness. However this one-family-owned model was something special, with the added kudos of being one of what are believed to be two surviving left-hookers. Hampson said that this car was ordered new via a Liverpool dealer and went to Italy where it remained until 2018. Said to have excellent body and paint and a good engine and gearbox, it was an interesting offering for not too much money.

1937 SS JAGUAR 1½-LITRE SALOON

While not as rare as a ‘Derby’ Bentley, this SS 1 ½-litre saloon – the vendor owned and restored over 24 years – was
