Why I absolutely love my ‘rocket-propelled sofa’

I recently bought a Lexus GS300 on the spur of the moment – as you do (well it seems that I do, anyway).

And I have to say – what a revelation it has been!

It has amazing performance for such big saloon with 218bhp from its naturally-aspirated six-cylinder engine, a top speed 145mph and switchable automatic transmission. The build quality is superb and it’s fully loaded with every electrical gizmo possible – to be honest it’s like driving a rocket-propelled comfy sofa!

Yet I got all of this amazing car this for less than price of a tatty old Ford Fiesta. I’m so impressed that I've just bought another GS to go with my 1991 Toyota Celica GT.

It’s worth remembering that these cars are out there hiding in plain sight and must be among the biggest bargain around today. I’d definitely suggest buying one now before prices go up – as they inevitably will one day.

London show has its fans…

Unlike the critical visitors to the 2023 London Classic Car Show, quoted in CCW (8 March) I felt that the Olympia show was the best yet. It is not the number of exhibits that counts, but their quality.

On that basis this year was a terrific success, ranging from pre-war Italian sports cars, through the split screen 1960s VW camper van to the outstanding selection of Fiat 500s. And to display the Beatles’ Minis was a triumph of organisational brilliance demonstrating for the first time the genius of Sir Alec Issigonis’ famous motoring creation in its social context of the swinging Sixties.
