Mike Brewer and fellow classic experts share their advice for firs-ttime classic buyers at NEC show

Some of Britain’s top classic experts have shared their tips for first-time classic buyers on how to bag the best purchases.

Wheeler Dealers star, Mike Brewer, joined a panel to share advice at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show and said that one of his top tips would be to join a club.

He told showgoers: ‘Fill your library with information before you fill your garage; it doesn’t matter what the car – you should join the club first.

‘For the price of a tank of fuel you’ll get a wealth of information, including access to people who can help you through the buying process. You’re also more likely to find the car you’re looking for within the owners’ club and the club will be able to tell you how good that car is.’

Motul’s classic expert, Andy Wait, said: ‘Make sure it’s been maintained and make sure that you understand what you’re physically buying. You can buy a classic that looks very shiny and polished but then you get home and find that there are engine noises, rattles and things that come off.

‘Making sure that you’re buying a car that’s been well maintained will take half of the fear factor away and reduce the risk that you might have spend the same amount again mending it.’

Actor and Classic Obsessions presenter, Gary Mavers, added: ‘If you’re thinking of buying a classic by all means jump into it, but don’t jump into it blind. Have an idea of what you’re going to be spending and what that car’s likely to be worth at the end of the journey.
