WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

This is a pre-facelift Fourtrak so it sits on the original all-leaf spring suspension. While the ride is lively, it’s no worse than a Series Land Rover, and there’s far less commotion with no rattles and squeaks on the move. This model is aided by three-stage damper setting control and, as far as could be ascertained, it’s working properly – though we didn’t check out the 4x4 system as the hubs have to be manually locked externally. Unusually for a Fourtrak, this is a petrol example, providing adequate performance. Gear changes are smooth and the steering is precise, with a nice amount of feedback. All round, this Fourtrak felt barely run in.

BODYWORK CHECK

If it wasn’t for a slight nick on the nearside rear wing, the two-tone bodywork passes as pristine, with not even the door mirrors showing any scrapes. It appears to have never been off-road as it’s very clean underneath, and the body’s flanks are straight. Previous owners have preserved the doors with edge protectors. The painted wheels (shod with hardly-worn tyres) are immaculate, as is the towbar which, along with rear light guards, are the only extras fitted.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

The period Cannon overmats have kept the carpet excellent, and the only sign of use is a scuffed rear door card, but the carpeted boot floor shows negligible wear. The manual tilt sunroof works fine, while the 34-year-old cloth interior has retained its original look, feel and smell. Even the steering wheel and gear knob show almost zero ageing.
