The Spirit of Saab £12.99

Given that Saabs are – or were – especially appreciated by more creative types, it seems only fitting that this book was penned by an artist and photographer as well as a writer. Vaughan Grylls has been a Saab enthusiast since his first 900 in 1984, and this book, subtitled 50 Reasons Why We Love Them, looks at the engineering, inventiveness, ingenuity and, well, sheer Swedishness that has endeared the cars to so many. Presented as bite-sized chapters, with accompanying pictures, some of the entries are a little dubious (such as Turbo sunglasses – nowt to do with Saabs, save for a publicity shot of a Taiwanese rock star wearing them posing beside a 900). But others, like the aviation-inspired dashboards, distinctive wheel designs and even the door handles, all serve as reminders of what made Saabs different. Definitely one for marque enthusiasts, who probably already have far more than 50 motivations to adore their Trollhättan machines.
