Drive-It Day marked the start of a great summer packed with classic shows – and there’s never been a better time to take the plunge if you’re thinking of snapping up a classic to enjoy it.

Plenty of prized motors have been pulling in eye-opening prices at auctions since the start of the year – a Ford Sierra RS Cosworth for £596k and a £164k Lotus Elan, formerly owned by Dame Diana Rigg spring to mind – but most of the buying and selling behind the headlines has been on cars costing £10k or less.

Market experts told us that while demand has been slipping back for high-end classics, some of which haven’t been fetching the prices that they would have done a year or two ago, there’s been an uptick in demand for cheaper classics, as we reported in CCW’s 12 April issue. And it’s not investors doing the bidding – it’s enthusiasts like you and me who just want to get out and have fun.

As Hampson Auctions’ Laurel Johnson told CCW: ‘There seems to be a lot of interest at the moment in simple, affordable classics that you can have fun with and not feel too guilty about spending money on.

‘Maybe enthusiasts are looking for something that isn’t all doom ‘n’ gloom and are spending their money on a classic that they can enjoy at home rather than two weeks abroad.’

Turn the page and we’ve got eight pages packed with all of the latest prices, expert tips and advice on what you can snap up – but if you want any more inspiration these are the classics that I would have snapped up at auction, given a £10k budget.

1974 RELIANT REBEL

With the cost of parts and labour still creeping up it all too often makes sense to shell out an restored beauty than a project – and who better to revive a classic than owners’ club experts and our spanner-wielding colleagues at Practical Classics? That’s exactly what you got with this meticulously mended Rebel, which Classic Car Auctions sold at its restoration show sale last month after many months of fastidious fixes – including on stage at the Classic Motor Show last November – with every penny going to help NHS charities. You’re not going to get a better resto of a Rebel than this one – and if you did, the work would cost a lot more than this gem.

INSURE IT FOR £89.97 or £107.97 with agreed value,
