Advertising British Cars 1967-69 £5.99

Volume 13 of this 16-book collection takes us up to the final years of the 1960s and major upheavals for the British car industry, not least the formation of British Leyland. The infamous roundel logo begins to make its presence felt in adverts for BL’s assortment of marques, although it’s intriguing to see both BMC and BL branding being used in marketing from exactly the same period. A shift in emphasis is becoming obvious elsewhere in the 72-page book as the 1970s beckon; away from the more restrained and coquettish imagery of earlier in the decade towards a more blatant use of attractive women and handsome chaps to sell cars. Step forward Ford with its Capri and Cortina, Triumph and its Spitfire, Bond promoting its Equipe 2-Litre GT and BL doing the obvious by pairing Minis with miniskirts. Definitely a compendium that illustrates how times have changed.
