Sweet success for lakeland meet

Packed Dalemain meet helped to raise funds for charities backed by Wigton Motor Club.

DRIVE-IT DAY, DALEMAIN, CUMBRIA, 23 APRIL

The day’s biggest classic gathering in the north of England was set for a shaky start – with forecasts of Cumbrian downpours and the venue being double booked with Dalemain’s marmalade festival – but that didn’t deter more than 200 classic owners from taking part.

This packed gathering encompassed everything from a 1926 Citroën B12 pick-up truck and a 1929 Frazer-Nash through to a 2010 Renault Wind and a brace of decade-old Morgan Roadsters, with enthusiasts heading from both sides of the nearby Scottish border to the grounds of the Grade I-listed country home in the heart of the Lake District.

The turnout was boosted by better-than-expected weather throughout, with event organiser Wigton Motor Club adding that the double booking actually helped to promote classics to visitors attending the marmalade festival. The club also used the meet to help raise funds for Cockermouth Mountain Rescue and North West Air Ambulance, with showgoers encouraged to leave donations.

Club spokesman Graeme Forrester said: ‘While the double booking was accidental it’s helped to generate more interest in the cars and we’ve managed to attract new members and get bookings for event.

‘The turnout’s been really good for Drive-It Day, and it’s a great start to the season. It’s always great to meet enthusiasts and see what they’ve brought along.’
