WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

The GT390 ‘S Code’ Mustang Fastback is what Steve McQueen drove in Bullitt so it’s not exactly sluggish. There’s an immense amount of power (and noise) and it’s easily unleashed, although the Ford is also relatively content to just potter. Its handling lacks the sharpness of European rivals and there’s the usual vagueness to the steering but the brakes – discs up front – work well and the gear lever pushes easily enough through its gears, albeit with quite a heavy clutch pedal.

BODYWORK CHECK

This car was specialist-restored in 2012-2013 (in the UK – it came over here from New York in 1970) and has apparently only been used sparingly and in the dry since. That assertion is believable because the bodywork is pretty much spotless. There’s barely so much as a stone chip on the nose to spoil the Brittany Blue paint, while the chrome is all very shiny and largely free from tarnishes. There’s no kerbing or scraping apparent on the wheels, thanks to their being protected by chunky BFGoodrich Radial T/A tyres. They’re date-stamped 2021, so have plenty of life left in them. A grille with no auxiliary lights comes with the car.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

The cabin is a chrome-laden, black vinyl celebration of US optimism and flamboyance; and, as with the rest of the car, there’s very little to fault. There’s no wear to any of the seats and even the carpets, protected by Mustang-branded fitted overmats, show little sign of use. All of the gauges – including the clock – work and the modern retro-styled DAB radio blends in well.
