UPCOMING AUCTION

HAMPSON AUCTIONS, MAVERICKS, FLINTSHIRE. 13 MAY

Auctioneer returns to Flintshire with a storied selection

W hat’s believed to be the first VW Beetle Cabriolet sent to the UK is to be included in Hampson’s next sale. The believed matching-numbers drop-top comes with plenty of history and is described as ‘stunning’. It has a £25,000-30,000 estimate.

A good selection of modern classics will please a growing number of punters but regular classics get a welcome look-in. A very smart 1966 Riley Elf is estimated at £8000- 10,000, and a same-year Austin Mini Countryman would make an ideal BMC stablemate for it; it has a £10,000-12,000 estimate.

Away from BMC there’s a 1961 Singer Gazelle convertible (£5000- 7000) and a no-reserve 1954 Standard Vanguard Phase II. A 1937 Austin 10 Cambridge is also at no reserve.

On the classic performance front a 1966 Lotus Elan (£20,000-24,000) is joined by a 1973 Jaguar E-type FHC: this three-owner example, which lived in Arizona before being imported in 2020, is said to be largely original. Its £24,000-26,000 estimate makes it a tempting prospect. There’s a 1966 MG Midget (£4000-6000) and a 1973 version at no-reserve. A 1981 MGB GT showing a credible 14,000 miles is also offered without reserve.

Performance Fords are well represented by a 1987 Sierra RS Cosworth that’s reportedly superb throughout and has a sensible £55,000-60,000 estimate; it’s joined by a restored 1980 Escort RS2000 (£25,000-30,000) and an also restored 1973 RS Mexico, this having a £55,000- 60,000 estimate. A 2003 Mondeo ST offered at no-reserve.

From the far East a 1994 Nissan 300ZX Turbo (£6000-8000) and a 1998 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V GSR (£18,000-22,000) taps into modern market trends. ❚ 01606 828124 hampsonauctions.com

1961 SINGER GAZELLE CONVERTIBLE

Hampson’s Gazelle is almost as raffish as a Sunbeam Rapier drophead. The bodywork appears smart while the red interior offers room for improving and the vendor, who snapped it up in 2020, says that the brakes have been overhauled, the radiator re-cored and a reconditioned fuel pump and distributor installed.

1966 JAGUAR 2.4

This red, wire-wheel Mk2 has had just one former keeper and is believed to have covered just 19,000 miles from new. More recently it has enjoyed what’s being called a ‘high standard’ restoration. Its history file includes every test certificate since 1981, Hampson says.
