My girlfriend and I managed to get the Midget to Peterborough so it was time to take it somewhere vastly more romantic – especially as I hadn’t done anything for Valentine’s Day apart from post a card. Still, I had a quaint weekend away planned, a cottage booked and a glamorous lunch date in Beaulieu organised.
I loaded the Midget up with my overnight bag and a brimmed jerry can (can’t trust those Smiths gauges, or my own hubris) on the Friday afternoon and set off, west bound and down. My girlfriend would take a train from her London office to Brockenhurst – all I had to do was meet her there.
A gentle run down the A34 saw us making good time though with the previous fuel calamity (CCW, 5 April) still ringing in my ears I topped off with some of BP’s best at Didcot. Better safe than sorry.
My daily driver is a Suzuki Jimny, which is essentially a box on wheels and therefore perfect for lobbing stuff into, but I’d had to pack carefully for this weekend. Cramming my girlfriend’s baggage into the car proved to be a challenge, especially with a jerry can and my toolbox taking up some of the already limited boot space, though the space behind the seats Nothing fazed us during the turned out to be a practical shelf for weekend, not even the heavy handbags and coats.
