Taking pride in driving

Today’s Fords are getting automated but Simon Biggs prefers the analogue charm of cars like the Anglia.

Ford has brought out the first self-drive technology for cars and refers to it as driver assist technology because the driver must keep their eyes on the road or the system prompts them to re-engage.

One of the reasons why I drive a classic car is that I feel more engaged with the road and the driving experience. I personally love driving and enjoy the experience of driving and controlling the vehicle. I take a pride in driving well, getting that hill-start spot on and parking the vehicle in a tight space safely and accurately.

Ford is only offering this facility on one model, it only works on motorways and costs £18 per month via a subscription. You can’t un-invent something, so how long will it be before other manufacturers offer the same technology now that the technology is here?

Ford was asked what would happen if someone fell asleep or was’nt paying attention and a spokesperson said that the car would prompt them. They would then be prompted again, and eventually the car would slow down to a stop. In the fast lane? Maybe the sound of horns and screeching brakes will prompt the driver to put their hands back on the wheel just before the inevitable impact!

The one we missed…

Having read your piece on sub-£7k ragtops (CCW, 12 April), the obvious omission from my perspective is the Honda S2000. I owned one for 17 years and deeply regretted having to sell it. All the power and joy to drive of the Boxster but with far better looks – it is an absolute classic.
