WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

The tuned engine fires with ease and settles to a steady idle. The gear lever selects ratios with aplomb and every input to the wheel creates an unhesitating reaction. This Elan feels like any other well-maintained example at low speeds but ask more and it comes alive. The suspension is taut and the brakes – which are set up for track work – are sublime and come into their own once they have a bit of heat in them. Your first touch on the middle pedal feels underwhelming but a second go is a revelation – this car sheds speed like nothing else and provides immense feel.

BODYWORK CHECK

Part of the car’s restoration saw a change to British Racing Green that has been applied well. It is generally free of swirls, runs or marks and has a good clear coat on top with no crazing or discolouration. A thorough detailing and polish and this car would make it a strong concours contender. The Minilite wheels are shod with appropriate Avon tyres that complement the car’s handling and round out its visuals neatly. Glass, badges, chrome pieces, lights and lamps are all in fine fettle.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

The conventional cabin is exceptionally well presented; there is nary a mark, scuff, scratch or thread out of place inside. A full re-build and restoration in 2014 has been religiously cared for in the near decade since. The seats hold you tight and firm while the four-point harness adjusts well and is comfortable even for a taller driver. Even the roll bar in the back is nicely presented and unobtrusive.
