Top event pushes up prices

Competitions like the Mille Miglia are bucket list events for any fan but gaining access with an eligible car increasingly comes at a premium…

Classics eligible for one of Europe’s top regularity events are fetching far in excess of what their usual counterparts would go for, market experts have told CCW.

Like the Goodwood Revival, there’s another globally-renowned event where demand outstrips places – the Mille Miglia. For owners of the ‘right cars’ it’s considered something of a ‘must-do’, offering more glamour than it did in its original 1927-1957 period.

Revived in 1977 it’s now a regularity event that’s open to cars of the type that took part in the original and remains enormously popular.

Historic Racing Driver’s Club supremo, Julius Thurgood, told CCW: ‘A lot of talk goes on about Mille Miglia-eligible cars but try applying for a place! It’s virtually a closed shop with an internal criterion as to what (or who) gets in.

The organisers publish a creditable list of eligible models but that’s the easy bit. Certain cars that have done the event are posted on the event website – these are accredited cars and while they do not guarantee a place, these cars a certainly worth more than their exact counterparts that have not participated.’

Julius said that the gulf value-wise between a car that ran in period and a ‘normal’ example is immense, while cars running in the revived Mille Miglia also command a premium:

‘In value terms a friend’s car is considered to be worth 30 times more than a normal model due to its provenance. This factor does not in any way apply to a car that has competed in the retrospective but was not in the original event. However, there is definitely an uplift in value for any car that has participated in the retrospective event.’
