AUCTION REVIEW BRIGHTWELLS, TIMED ONLINE. CLOSING 10 MAY

A selection of pre-war and ’50s classics chimed particularly well at Brightwell’s latest sale

Another month, another Brightwells’ timed online sale, and a 1962 Jaguar E-type roadster that needed re-commissioning was away for £51,520. It was one of a number of older British buys that performed well in this online-only timed auction, with canny buys including a no-reserve 1968 MGC roadster with numerous upgrades including a Toyota fiv-espeed gearbox, four-pot brakes and limited-slip differrential was cannily bought at £17,584.

Arestored 1954 Sunbeam Alpine MkIII with restoration costs that exceeded £50k went for £47,936, going some way to scotch the theory of recent years that 1950s cars are no longer in demand. This was reinforced by a restored 1959 Morris Minor Tourer with later 1098cc engine making £9520 and a 1951 Daimler DB18 Consort that was snapped up at £3584.

A rare 1957 Lloyd LP600 that was restored in the 2000s but was in need of some mechanical refreshing was snaffled for £3696 while a well-maintained 1949 Bentley MkVI with plenty of history was something of a bargain at just £14,560.

A 1969 Gilbern Genie (one of 197 built, Brightwells pointed out) had seen restoration work in the early 1990s and sold for £9072. Also restored in the early 1990s, an ex- American market 1969 Triumph TR6 was nicely bought at £12,320.

Brightwells’ pre-war segment always does well, and cars included a 1929 MG Riley special (MG Midget chassis, Riley 9 engine) bought for £22,649, a 1936 Riley MPH recreation based on a Riley Kestrel chassis, away for £43,624 and a 1928 Peugeot 109S, which was a bit of a conspicuous bargain at just £4593. ❚ 01568 611122 brightwells.com

1949 BENTLEY MkVI

History is everything with any Bentley, and this early MkVI’s paperwork detailed how well it had been looked after over the years. While its first owner was known there was little information until 1978 when the paperwork trail kicked in. In the very early 1990s some of th
