AUCTION REVIEW HAMPSON AUCTIONS, HOLYWELL, 13 MAY

A record number of bidders helped 80 per cent of the cars consigned at Holywell to find new homes

1987 Austin Metro GTa SOLD £6075; 1971 Morris 1800 SOLD £3375; 1966 Austin Mini Countryman SOLD £12,375; 1966 Riley Elf SOLD £6525

The top price at Hampsons’ latest sale went to a two-owner 1999 Ferrari 550 Maranello that had covered a warranted 9000 miles from new. With much history its £135,000 comfortably exceeded its £80,000- 100,000 estimate.

A pair of Jaguar E-types found new homes, along with a 1966 Mk2 in increasingly-popular 2.4 guise. The E-types, a 1970 2+2 and a three-owner 1973 FHC were bought for £34,875 and £29,250 respectively, while the Mk2 was away for 18 grand.

Elsewhere, a 1966 Lotus Elan FHC (restored, some upgrades) was away for £22,500. From the same year a smart, two-keeper MG Midget was well bought at £4725: a 1973 Midget, believed to have been re-built in the early 2000s, went for £5175.

A one-owner (for 40 years) 1977 Porsche 911 2.7 Targa sold for £34,875 while a 1995 Aston Martin DB7 i6 hit an eye-openingly tempting £10,688. On the saloon front a wire wheel 1975 Triumph 1500TC (two owners, 58,000 miles) was good enough to make £6750 while a 1984 Volkswagen Golf 1.3 CL five-door was away at a very healthy £5625.

Staying with hatchbacks, but in a hotter form, a 1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo Raider (with invoices to the tune of £22,000) was bought for £11,812 and a 1989 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6 for £5625, while from the ‘warm’ hatchback arena came a 1989 Austin Metro GTA, which was off to a new home at £6075.

Hampson’s next sale is at the Oulton Park Gold Cup on 30 July.

1981 MGB GT

Showing a credible 14,000 miles from new and temptingly offered at no-reserve, this GT was one of the final 650 built. Despite showing eight keepers the mileage was borne out by old test certificates and the car’s presentation. Maintenance had been carried out by marque specialists, Hampson pointed out. With very tidy bodywork and paint and a fine interior the buyer bagged a good ‘un here.

1987 VOLVO 760 TURBO

When did you last see one of these? The 760 is little-seen these days – and the Turbo is even rarer – and this one was rarer still having been ordered with the full Volvo body kit, lowered suspension and

Volvo cross-spoke alloys. The vendor bought it from its original (business) owner in 1991 and it came to the sale in delightfully original order, having never been painted but always garaged, it was noted. There was room for some cosmetic improvement (especially around the wheel arches) and a re-paint would have added to the coolness of this thoroughly appealing saloon.
