Event organisers pause proceedings amid claims of illegal driving

The historic Scotch Piper has attracted the attention of plenty of classic owners since a classic meet was set up a decade ago.

A nacclaimed classic meet in the north west has been mothballed amid claims that its long-running venue was being plagued by ‘boy racers’.

The weekly meets had been taking place at the Scotch Piper pub at Lydiate, Merseyside, for the past nine years attracting 80-100 cars on its busiest nights.

Pub landlady, Caroline Godden, told CCW: ‘It’s happened over the past year or so. We’ve even had cars doing doughnuts and that’s not something we want happening here.

‘The pub has got a lot busier and we have limited space. There are people who come to these events and bring their own drinks.’

Event organiser, Andy Shaw, said that the meet will be re-launched with checks being made on the cars attending, with the first of the new events set to take place on Monday, 12 June: ‘It seems there's always a few who spoil it for the rest. But come June, we will consider a re-launch for proper classic cars – it is supposed to be a classic car meet after all.

‘Hopefully all our regular car club friends will understand and will continue to be welcomed at the pub at any time.’
