The Classic Car Loan Project, which encourages young people into the classic movement by loaning them a vehicle for a year, is appealing for more car enthusiasts to come forward

Tom Pocock and Mary Skinner are proof that the scheme really works. After taking part in the project and borrowing a Vauxhall Victor, they ended up so hooked on classics that they bought this 1966 Volvo 131 to take to classic events.

An award-winning scheme that loans classics to young drivers in the hope of setting them on them the path to future ownership has found itself with cars still waiting to be assigned to drivers.

The Classic Car Loan Project (CCLP) began in 2016 with just one car and now has more than 20 on its books but has found itself with more vehicles than drivers able to participate.

Project instigator Bob Wilkinson – who last year picked up the Lifetime Achievement prize at the National Car Club Awards in recognition of his efforts to encourage new enthusiasts - told Classic Car Weekly: ‘The Classic Car Loan Project has been very successful since we started it around six years ago, but there is an issue at the moment because of the current economic climate.

‘Things like the cost of heating and inflation generally means that as a consequence, while we have the cars, we’re finding that there’s a declining number of applicants with the necessary spare cash to take the added responsibility of a classic car on board. I really do believe that the situation is as simple as that’.
