In search of a new ‘bedroom wall’ car

When I first saw a Jaguar E-type it was only a week or so after it was released for sale in 1961 and it was owned by a guy from a major aerospace business visiting a factory where I worked.

It pulled up and parked in the visitor car park by the factory entrance. At lunchtime, word had spread and over 50 people stood looking at this car – and from the back two shiny exhausts pointed up at an angle similar to a rocket or jet engine. It was the coupé which looked very fast even though it was standing still.

Enzo Ferrari said at the time it was the most beautiful car in the world – and to me it still is. However, I now have different dreams tinged heavily with a sense of reality. I would love to have a car as beautiful as the E-type but one that is environmentally more friendly perhaps, using hydrogen instead of petrol so at least I could hear the roar on full throttle.

But now I’m too old and rigid to fit into an E-type, so it will have to be taller with wider doors to get my 6ft frame into and out of the car.

Then there is the comfort and particularly the seating – four of them so my dream car would have to have suspension to absorb all of the shocks from the many pot holes on our roads, and comfy seats with air con to stop my dentures shaking loose and avoid sweating on hot days.

Perhaps better wipers could be fitted with auto washing when they get dirty along with auto-wiping when it rains, and forget the hood because when it’s down on sunny days it would burn my bald head to a crisp.

The wheels should be spoked using stainless steel with tyres soft enough to give a smooth ride but hard enough to hold the road in hard cornering, and not low profile. The boot should be capable of h
