Austin Rover Maestro and Montego £15.99

As author and Maestro and Montego aficionado Sam Skelton points out in his introduction, it has taken almost 40 years for a book to be written on these mid-range models of the 1980s and 1990s.

He’s done a very good job of unravelling the convoluted development of the two related types, as well as the assorted production variants and offshoots, including the MGs, vans and coachbuilt specials.

The book also looks at post-Austin Rover manufacture in Bulgaria, China and India, plus the brief British revival courtesy of Parkway Services and Apple 2000. There’s a very detailed buyer’s guide too.

While the picture quality is somewhat variable, with some brochure shots displaying prominent spine marks and other photos lacking resolution, the words make up for this by telling you all you might ever need to know about the Maestro and Montego, in an engaging and informative way.
