AUCTION REVIEW SWVA, POOLE. 27 OCTOBER

SWVA concluded its 2023 classic sales calendar with a 92 per cent sale rate

SWVA’s final auction of the year was a bittersweet moment for the Poole auctioneer because it’s now moving to a new location a short distance away after 52 years.

Ford was the most strongly represented marque in this sale, with models ranging from a 1939 V8 ambulance – away for £6770 – to a 2002 Fiesta Zetec, bought for a bargain £875. The dearth of Zodiac MkIIIs coming to market at the moment was remedied with a 1965 example that was estimated at £75008500 but fired-up Poole punters sufficiently to make £11,916. A 1982 Ford Capri 2.0S, estimated at £8-10k, was bought for £13,866.

Mercedes-Benz offerings were book-ended by a 1960 190 saloon making £8341 and a 2006 CLK220, £1850. Dearest of the ‘Benzes was a 1982 500SL selling for £16,141 against a £13,000-16,000 estimate.

On the British sports car front a 1954 Triumph TR2 made an £8-10k estimate-breaching £10,941 while a 1969 MG C Roadster and a 1996 MG RV8, sold for £16,791 and £11,482 respectively. A pair of 1971 ’BGTs, meanwhile, were away for £4116 and £6012 respectively.

While mention of the festive season might be anathema to some, Christmas came early for the vendor of a 2000 Rover Mini Cooper Sport that had been handed an £8500-9500 estimate but was away for £13,107. That, however, was eclipsed by the 1970 Austin Mini Clubman 1275GT whose £4-5k estimate was positively obliterated when it went on to make an eyebrow-raising £17,820.

Older classics as always were popular, too, with a 1963 Sunbeam Rapier (£2-3k) selling for £6499 and a 1964 Rover 95 (£3-4k) £4874. ❚ 01202 745466 swva.co.uk

1965 FORD ZODIAC

SOLD £11,916

After a flurry of Zodiac MkIIIs last year this 1965 example saw a welcome return of the be-finned big Ford. SWVA’s car had just two owners, the first for 54 years, and it had been well looked-after during both tenures. Bills across the years detailed work carried out and it was noted that there had been a bare-metal re-paint last year. The light blue body and (original but good order) dark blue interior made this a top-class offering at the right price.

1982 MERCEDES-BENZ 500SL

SOLD £16,141

There was something immensely appealing about this Thistle Green over Olive Green 500SL, and that appeal wasn’t confined solely to its colour combination. It looked good inside and out and the book contained 26 stamps covering 1982-2004. Work included a gearbox overhaul and new engine mounts and a new hood was fitted in 2021 and the interior refreshed in 2022.
