UPCOMING AUCTION

H&H CLASSICS, DUXFORD. 29 NOVEMBER

…but a Lotus prototype and a strong selection of pre-war cars should attract plenty of bids in Duxford, too – and they ’re far from alone

H&H’s final auction of 2023 is notable for offering not one but three Allards, with a 1948 L-type, 1950 P1 project and 1951 K2 all competing for punters’ cash. They are joined by another 1950s rarity, in this instance a 1951 Lea-Francis 14. Originally a saloon it was re-bodied as a tourer in more recent years.

The 1950s also serves up Austin-Healeys in the guise of a 1954 100/4, a 1966 100 project and a 1958 100/6. But if the ‘Healeys are considered devoid of comforts there’s salvation in the shape of a 1959 Riley 2.6 saloon, a 1952 Bentley MkVI and a 1956 Cadillac Coupe de Ville.

H&H has also assembled a selection of pre-war cars that include a 1916 Ford Model T tourer and an imposing 1929 Hupmobile model A sedan fitted with a Ford Pinto engine and drivetrain.

There’s also a 1929 Essex Super Six sedan and, like the Hupmobile and Ford Model T, is offered at no-reserve. A 1936 Frazer Nash BMW 319/55 sports with much period competition history, meanwhile.

A 1954 Jaguar XK120 FHC sold new to female racing driver Patsy Bury is joined by its spiritual successors in the forms of a 1965 E-type FHC and a 1970 roadster. More big-powered drop-tops include a 1968 MGC Roadster lining up with a 1972 Triumph Stag and, continuing the V8 theme, a 1964 Daimler SP250.

Smaller convertibles include two 1971 Lotus Elan Sprints in fixe-dhead and drop-head form and a 1970 Datsun Fairlady Sports 1600. Get ready for spring early this year!

1974 FORD ESCORT 1300XL

While RS and Mexico MkIs are becoming commonplace auction offerings the regular models simply aren’t, making this late MkI ‘more-door’ a delightfully refreshing change. Just two owners from new and showing a credible 19.800 miles, it’s said to be in time-warp condition and running well. And if that’s not enough, it’s Purple Velvet, too, with a period-perfect black vinyl roof and optional overriders. An utter delight.

ESTIMATE £7000- £9000

1948 ALLARD L-TYPE ROADSTER

One of a trio of Clapham’s finest in the sale, this flathead Ford-powered L-type started life painted black with beige hood and interior, and there were five owners before the vendor.

It was two-tone blue come 2008 but had another colour change to the current red during restoration.

Coming to the sale with excellent frame, bodywork and interior it’s noted that the brakes were re-built two years ago and the Stromberg carburettor, along with the wheels, are recent. Extremely tempting at the estimate suggested.

ESTIMATE £25,000- £30,000
