Classics go green for four million miles

Clubs, businesses and owners praised for making our hobby eco-friendly

The emissions from than four million miles of classic vehicle driving have been offset by the planting of new trees as part of a club-backed scheme.

The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) said that two years of working with Tree-V, a company that plants indigenous trees that capture carbon, had helped them to hit the milestone.

Communications director Wayne Scott told Classic Car Weekly: ‘We emit such an immeasurably small amount of carbon – let’s not forget that classics account for less than a quarter of one per cent of all the vehicle miles travelled in the UK – so it’s quite easy for us to help offset that carbon, which is why it’s great that we have this scheme.

‘It really has got the support of the historic vehicle community, so to have offset four million miles is a fantastic achievement.’

The FBHVC also confirmed that all of the carbon involved in getting the classics onto its stand at this year’s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, including BRM V16 Chassis IV, a Land Rover Forward Control fire appliance and a Midland Red motorway coach, would be offset using the scheme.
